Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Czech Republic (Czechia)?
Yes. Indian passport holders require a Schengen visa to visit the Czech Republic. Czechia (the country’s official short name) is a full member of the Schengen Area, and the visa application follows standard Schengen rules. A visa issued by the Czech embassy allows you to travel across all 29 Schengen countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period.
Prague is one of Europe’s most breathtaking capitals — a city largely untouched by World War II, with a preserved medieval core, Gothic spires, Baroque churches, and a lively café and food scene. It is also one of Europe’s more affordable cities for Indian travellers, with accommodation, dining, and transport costs lower than Western Europe.
How to Apply
- Confirm Czechia is your main destination. If you will spend more nights in Czechia than any other Schengen country, apply through the Czech embassy via VFS Global. If another Schengen country gets more nights, apply there instead.
- Book a VFS Global appointment through the Czech embassy’s VFS portal. Book well in advance — slots fill up 4 to 8 weeks ahead during peak season.
- Prepare all required documents before your appointment.
- Complete the Schengen visa application form (Annex I) from the VFS or Czech embassy website. Print, fill in block letters, sign, and date.
- Attend your VFS appointment. Submit documents, provide biometrics, and pay €80. The appointment takes 15 to 20 minutes.
- Wait for processing — 15 to 30 working days for standard applications.
- Collect your passport at the VFS centre or by courier. Verify visa dates, duration of stay, and number of entries.

Tips
- Prague is extremely walkable. The historic centre (Staré Město, Josefov, Malá Strana, Hradčany) can be explored on foot over 2 to 3 full days.
- Combine with Austria or Germany. Prague is 4.5 hours from Vienna by train and 3.5 hours from Munich. A multi-country Schengen trip is easy and popular.
- Bohemian Switzerland National Park is a stunning day trip from Prague for hiking and natural sandstone rock formations.
- Czech currency: The Czech koruna (CZK) is used, NOT the Euro. Exchange currency on arrival or withdraw from ATMs — airport exchange rates are poor. EUR is often accepted at tourist attractions but at unfavourable rates.
- Cost of travel: Prague is significantly cheaper than Western Europe. A good restaurant meal costs ₹800 to ₹1,500 per person. Transport within the city is excellent and inexpensive.
- Český Krumlov: A UNESCO World Heritage town 3 hours from Prague — one of the most charming small towns in Central Europe.
- Beer culture: Czechia is the world’s highest per-capita beer consumer. Czech lager (Pilsner Urquell, Budvar, Kozel) is exceptional and very cheap. Non-alcoholic options are also widely available.
