Do Indian passport holders need a visa for the Schengen Area?
Yes. As of May 2026, Indian passport holders require a Schengen visa to visit any of the 29 Schengen member countries. There is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival arrangement for Indian citizens travelling to the Schengen Zone. You must apply in advance at the relevant embassy or consulate in India.
What is the Schengen Area?
The Schengen Area is a zone of 29 European countries that have abolished internal border controls. A single Schengen visa allows you to travel freely across all member countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period.
The 29 Schengen member countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Two important exceptions: Ireland and the United Kingdom are not part of the Schengen Area and require completely separate visas.
Which Country Should I Apply Through?
Choosing the right embassy is the most critical first step.
- Single-country trip: Apply through the embassy of that country.
- Multi-country trip (unequal stays): Apply through the embassy of the country where you will spend the most nights.
- Multi-country trip (equal stays): Apply through the embassy of the first Schengen country you will enter.
- Transit only: Apply through the embassy of the first Schengen country of entry.
Example: a trip with 7 nights in France and 4 nights in Germany requires an application to the French embassy. A trip with 5 nights each in France and Germany, entering France first, also goes to the French embassy.
Most Schengen embassies in India operate through VFS Global centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and other major cities.
How to Apply
- Decide which embassy to apply through using the rules above.
- Book a VFS Global appointment on the relevant embassy’s VFS portal. Appointment slots fill up weeks in advance, particularly in peak travel season (March to September).
- Gather your documents fully before the appointment date.
- Complete the Schengen visa application form (Annex I), available on the VFS or embassy website. Print, fill in, and sign it.
- Attend your appointment at the VFS centre. Submit all documents and provide biometrics (fingerprints and photograph). This takes 10—20 minutes.
- Pay the €80 fee at the centre. Payment is accepted by card or cash depending on the centre.
- Track your application via the VFS tracking portal. Processing takes 15—30 working days on average.
- Collect your passport from the VFS centre or opt for courier delivery. Check the visa dates and number of entries carefully before leaving.

- Travel insurance: approximately ₹1,500—₹3,000 depending on duration and provider

Tips
- Book your VFS appointment as early as possible because slots fill up 4—8 weeks in advance during peak season.
- You can apply up to 6 months before your travel date, and no sooner.
- Purchase travel insurance from a reputable Indian insurer such as Tata AIG, HDFC Ergo, or Bajaj Allianz. Schengen consulates accept policies from Indian insurers that show coverage in Euros across all Schengen countries.
- Show a stable, consistent bank balance over 6 months. A large deposit made in the weeks before your application raises questions.
- Write a detailed cover letter. A day-by-day itinerary with hotel names, city names, and purpose for each stop shows the consulate you have a real and planned trip.
- Your employer’s letter should confirm your salary, the specific leave dates approved, and a statement that you will return to your job. Vague letters are a common reason for delays.
- A Schengen visa does not allow entry to Ireland or the United Kingdom. Both countries require entirely separate visas applied for independently.
- If you have been refused a Schengen visa before, disclose it honestly. Include an explanation and address the previous refusal reasons with stronger documentation.
