Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Austria?
Yes. Indian passport holders require a Schengen visa to visit Austria. Austria is a full member of the Schengen Area, which means the visa application process follows standard Schengen rules. A single Schengen visa from the Austrian embassy allows you to travel freely across all 29 Schengen countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Austria is one of Europe’s most beautiful and culturally rich destinations. Vienna’s imperial palaces, Salzburg’s baroque architecture (and Mozart’s birthplace), the Austrian Alps, and the stunning Hallstatt lake village make it a top destination for Indian travellers seeking a classic European experience.
How to Apply
- Determine if Austria is your primary destination. If Austria is where you will spend the most nights, apply to the Austrian embassy via VFS Global. If another Schengen country has more nights, apply through that country’s embassy instead.
- Book your VFS Global appointment on the Austrian embassy’s VFS portal. Appointment slots fill up weeks in advance; book as early as possible.
- Gather all required documents before your appointment date.
- Complete the Schengen visa application form (Annex I) available on the VFS website. Print, fill in block letters, sign and date.
- Attend your VFS appointment. Submit all documents, provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo), and pay the €80 fee. The appointment itself takes 15 to 20 minutes.
- Wait for processing. Standard processing is 15 to 30 working days. The embassy processes the application; VFS is only a submission centre.
- Collect your passport from the VFS centre or opt for courier return. Check your visa dates and number of entries carefully.

Tips
- Book early. VFS appointment slots for the Austrian consulate fill up 4 to 8 weeks in advance during peak season (April to September). Book your appointment before buying flights or hotels.
- Vienna is worth 3 to 4 days minimum. The Hofburg, Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna State Opera, Belvedere Museum, and the Naschmarkt are all major attractions. The city is extremely walkable.
- Combine with Germany or Switzerland. Austria sits at the heart of central Europe and is easily combined with Munich (3 hours by rail), Zurich (4 hours), or the Schengen Area broadly.
- Salzburg day trip or overnight: Salzburg is only 2.5 hours from Vienna by train. The Altstadt, Hohensalzburg Castle, and Mirabell Gardens are unmissable.
- Hallstatt: One of Austria’s most photographed villages is reachable in about 4 hours from Vienna. Book accommodation well in advance as it is extremely popular.
- Currency: Austria uses the Euro (€). Card payments are widely accepted everywhere.
- Transport: Austria has an excellent rail network (ÖBB). Purchasing an Interrail or Eurail pass can be cost-effective if you are combining multiple Schengen countries.
