Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Cancun?
It depends. Cancun is in Quintana Roo, Mexico, and follows Mexican visa rules. As of May 2026, there are two scenarios for Indian passport holders:
If you hold a valid US non-immigrant visa (B1/B2, F1, H1B, or similar): You do not need a separate Mexican visa. See the full Mexico with US visa guide for details on this exemption.
If you do not hold a valid US visa: You require a Mexican tourist visa, applied for in advance at the Mexican Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulate in Mumbai.
Cancun: Why Indians Visit
Cancun is one of the Caribbean’s most popular resort destinations and a growing favourite for Indian travellers. The main draws are:
- Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera): A 26-kilometre strip of all-inclusive resorts facing the Caribbean. Water is turquoise, calm, and warm year-round.
- Cenotes: Natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear freshwater. Cenote Ik Kil, Dos Ojos, and Gran Cenote are within 2 hours of Cancun.
- Chichen Itza: One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, approximately 2.5 hours from Cancun. An essential day trip.
- Tulum: Mayan ruins on a clifftop above the Caribbean, about 130 kilometres south of Cancun.

Tips
- If you are planning to visit the USA for any reason in the next few years, getting a US visa first and using it for Mexico is more cost-effective and faster than applying for a Mexican visa separately.
- Book hotels in Cancun’s Hotel Zone for beach access. Stay in downtown Cancun (El Centro) for a local experience at lower prices.
- Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Hurricane season runs June to November, and medical costs in private Mexican hospitals are high.
- The best time to visit is December to April for dry, sunny weather. August to October is the highest hurricane risk.
- Tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in Mexico. Use bottled water or a filtered water bottle.
- Cancun Airport (CUN) has direct connections from major Indian hubs via one stop in Europe or the UAE. Air France, KLM, British Airways, and Emirates are common routing options.
